Can Older Students Apply for Scholarships?

Whether you are returning to school after raising a family, changing careers, or finishing a degree you started years ago, there are many scholarships designed specifically for nontraditional students like you. 

At the OVC Scholarship Network, we host dozens of scholarships that are open to a wide variety of applicants, not just graduating high school seniors. Many of our scholarship sponsors are law firms, but these opportunities are not only for future lawyers. We welcome students pursuing careers in healthcare, education, social justice, business, the arts, and more.

Who Counts as a Nontraditional Student?

You may be considered a nontraditional or adult learner if any of the following apply to you:

• You are over the age of 24

• You delayed enrolling in college after high school

• You are a parent or caregiver

• You are a veteran or member of the military

• You are working full-time while in school

• You are attending college part-time or online

If one or more of these descriptions sound like you, you are not alone and you are not disqualified from scholarship support.

What Kind of Scholarships Are Available to Older Students?

Some scholarships specifically seek out applicants with life experience or unique challenges. These scholarships often focus on:

• Overcoming adversity

• Balancing education with family responsibilities

• Returning to school after a long break

• Changing careers later in life

• Contributing to the community in meaningful ways

Other scholarships are open to anyone, regardless of age, as long as they meet the stated criteria. For example, if a scholarship requires students to meet a certain grade point average or financial need, those criteria are age-neutral. You can apply and win even if you are not a traditional student.

Do I Have to Be in a Certain State to Apply for OVC Scholarships?

OVC Scholarship Network offers nationwide opportunities. Many of our sponsors are based in certain states, but applicants from all over the country can apply to most scholarships. Just be sure to review each scholarship’s eligibility rules before applying. Some are open to students at any accredited institution, while others are intended for residents of specific areas.

Tips for Nontraditional Students Applying for Scholarships

Applying as an adult learner may feel intimidating, but it does not have to be. Here are a few tips to help you put your best foot forward:

• Tell your story. Use your essay to explain your journey and your goals. Judges want to understand who you are and why you are pursuing your education now.

• Highlight your strengths. Even if your GPA is not perfect, talk about your real-world skills, work ethic, and life experience.

• Do not skip opportunities. If a scholarship does not mention age limits, you can probably apply. Do not assume it is only for high school seniors or young college students.

• Stay organized. Keep track of deadlines, requirements, and submission materials so you do not miss out.

• Apply to multiple scholarships. The more you apply, the better your chances. A few small awards can add up to big savings.

You do not need to be perfect to win a scholarship. You just need to show why investing in your education matters to you and why it should matter to the scholarship’s sponsor.
