How Do AI Detectors Know if I Wrote My College Scholarship Essay? 

Just like AI writing tools, AI detectors analyze writing patterns, sentence structure, and word predictability. They assign a score that estimates how likely it is that an AI system wrote the content. These tools aren't perfect, but they flag essays that look statistically unusual compared to natural human writing.

Do Scholarship Committees Reject Essays Written with AI? 

Some committees will automatically disqualify an application if it scores above a certain threshold on an AI detector. Others use the score as one factor among many. Here are practical steps to keep your scholarship essay genuine and competitive:

• Start with a personal story or specific memory that only you could tell.

• Write a rough draft by hand before editing.

• Read your essay out loud and rewrite anything that sounds formal or generic.

• Ask a teacher or mentor to review it when you’re done.

Don't paste a prompt into an AI tool and submit what comes back, even if you edit it first, and don’t rely on essays partly rewritten by AI. Your voice, your experiences, and your specific details are what make an essay sound real to a scholarship judge.

That being said, AI tools can be useful for spell-checking, and for catching segments where the essay doesn’t naturally flow. You can ask AI to act as if it were a scholarship committee judge reading your essay, and point out its weaknesses. Still – take its suggestions with a grain of salt, and rely more on real people whose opinions you trust.
