How to Ask for a Scholarship Recommendation Letter

Scholarship letters of recommendationGetting a scholarship in 2026 is about more than good grades and well-written essays. Most scholarship committees want to hear from someone who knows you personally, which means you'll need at least one strong recommendation letter.

Asking for a recommendation letter doesn't have to be stressful if you approach it the right way. If you're searching for scholarships to apply to, OVC Scholarship Network can help you find opportunities and maximize your chances of winning.

Who Should You Ask for a Scholarship Recommendation Letter?

Teachers and Academic Advisors

The strongest recommendation letters come from people who know your academic work and your character well. Teachers, academic advisors, and school counselors who have watched you grow over time are natural choices for recommenders. A good recommender is one who can:

  • Talk about specific accomplishments

  • Describe how you handled a setback

  • Praise your leadership skills

Any of this information can make your applications much stronger.

Employers and Community Mentors

If you've held a job or volunteered in your community, a supervisor or mentor can be just as great as an academic reference. Scholarship committees want to understand who you are beyond the classroom. Don't just choose the person with the most impressive title. Choose a person who can speak most specifically and genuinely about your strengths.

What Should You Include When You Ask for a Recommendation Letter?

When you ask for a recommendation letter, don't just make the request and leave it there. Give the person you ask everything they’ll need to write something strong and specific. Share the scholarship name, the submission deadline, what the committee is asking for, and a clear summary of your academic and personal accomplishments.

When you make your request, plan to provide:

  • Your resume or a written summary of your activities and accomplishments

  • A brief description of the scholarship and what the committee is looking for

  • The submission deadline and any formatting requirements

  • The method for submitting the letter, whether through an online portal or direct email

  • Any specific qualities or themes you'd like the letter to highlight

Having all of this prepared makes it much easier for your recommender to write a detailed letter on your behalf.

How Far Ahead of Time Should I Ask For a Scholarship Recommendation Letter?

Ask for a recommendation letter at least four to six weeks before the submission deadline. Recommenders are busy adults. If you ask too soon before the deadline, you’re more likely to get no for an answer or to receive a generic letter. Asking early shows respect for your recommender's time and gives the recommender space to write something strong.

Remember to send a thank-you message after the letter is submitted. It’s a small gesture, but it’s gracious and it will mean a lot to the person who wrote you the letter.

Can I Read My Scholarship Recommendation Letters?

Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, known as FERPA and found at 20 U.S.C. § 1232g(a)(1)(A), adult students have the right to inspect and review their own educational records. Many scholarship and college applications ask students to waive that right specifically for recommendation letters so they can be submitted without you reading them first.

Most scholarships require recommendation letters to be submitted directly to the scholarship committee so you don’t have a chance to see them. Others will ask you to upload a copy of the recommendation letter, in which case you can see it before you submit it.

Many people who write recommendation letters will give you a copy if you ask, but the best etiquette is not to ask to see the letter if the application process wants the recommender to submit it directly. Many professors, teachers, and employers won’t write recommendation letters unless you waive you write to see it first.
